On Thursday night, Ståle Solbakken’s Norway is set to travel to Cyprus aiming to secure a third consecutive victory in their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. Although initially a bad start, Norway have finally shown their potential after managing only one point in their first three games. They rebounded with a 3-1 triumph over Cyprus at home, followed by a 2-1 win against Georgia last month.
Cyprus currently finds themselves at the bottom of Group A, having suffered five consecutive defeats and conceding a significant number of goals. In just five games, Temuri Ketsbaia’s men allowed 17 goals while only managing to score two. It’s no surprise that Norway is the overwhelming favourite in this fixture.
Given the short odds across the board here, I’ve opted for a Bet Builder. With Norway holding 7 points, they can’t afford any more setbacks if they hope to catch up with Spain, who currently has 9 points and is facing a high-flying Scotland team at the same time as this game.
For the next leg of the Builder, Norway and Cyprus have been involved in high-scoring matches recently. Over 2.5 Goals have occurred in all of Norway’s last five fixtures and in four of Cyprus’s last five, making it a solid betting choice. To complete the bet, I’ve chosen Norway’s standout player, Erling Haaland to grab a goal.
While surprisingly Haaland does not fit in the International Break system for this game, I am willing to add him here. He has managed to score 7 goals in his last 10 games, although he hasn’t been as prolific as he was last season.
Outlandish statement? Hear me out…
For instance, three of his 7 goals in the last ten games came in Manchester City’s 5-1 victory over Fulham, where he secured a hat-trick. He also found the back of the net against Sheffield United, Nottingham Forest, and West Ham. Earlier in the season, he scored twice against Burnley in the opening game.
Up to this point in the season, Haaland has struggled to score against top-level opponents such as Arsenal (in two games), Sevilla, Newcastle United and Champions League opponents: Crvena Zvezda and RB Leipzig.
However, Cyprus represents a different challenge altogether. They possess one of the worse defences in Europe and Haaland has already notched two goals against them in June. Therefore, I have confidence that Haaland will score at least once on Thursday night.
Good luck!
