The African World Cup Qualifiers kicked off this week, and our attention turns to Guinea as a potential emerging nation for the World Cup 2026. Their upcoming match on Friday afternoon against Uganda (ranked 89th in the FIFA World Rankings) seems to favour the hosts, especially due to the impact of one particular player.
Serhou Guirassy has been a consistent source of my successful bets this season, showcasing his goal-scoring prowess for Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart. Surpassing almost everyone in the league, Guirassy has netted an impressive 15 goals in just NINE appearances this season, with only Harry Kane having scored more goals. Notably, Guirassy maintains a higher average goal-per-game rate than the England striker.
Having recovered from a brief injury spell, Guirassy is back in top form and eager to lead his country to World Cup qualification, supported by a decent team around him. Naby Keita, the team captain, a former defensive midfielder for Liverpool and now playing for Werder Bremen, contributes significantly. The defensive strength is reinforced by Issiaga Sylla from Montpeillier and Mouctar Diakhaby from Valencia, ensuring solid protection for the goalkeeper. Up front, Mohamed Bayo will help Guirassy. Playing for Le Harve this season, he has tallied an impressive 43 goals in the last three years across 114 appearances in Ligue 1.
On the contrary, their opponents, Uganda, appear comparatively weaker. None of their players feature in the top leagues, with defenders Bevis Mugabi at Motherwell in Scotland and Aziz Kayondo at Hapoel Tel Aviv in Israel being the noteworthy exceptions. The rest of the squad comprises players from domestic leagues or those playing in Egypt, Iraq, or South Africa.
Considering these factors, Guinea seems good for a win in this game. If only the bookies had opened up goal scorer markets, Guirassy would have undoubtedly been a key consideration.
Good luck!
