Brazil is gearing up to face their intense rivals, Argentina, following back-to-back defeats against Colombia (2-1) and Uruguay (2-0). They’re in dire need of a turnaround considering their recent stumble, which included a 1-1 draw against Venezuela at home last month. Historically, Brazil has maintained an undefeated record in World Cup qualifiers against Argentina on their home turf. However, a loss here could potentially knock them further down the qualification table and put coach Fernando Diniz’s job in jeopardy.
Argentina currently leads the standings with four wins in five qualifiers, securing clean sheets against Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Peru. Their previously unblemished record suffered a setback with a 2-0 loss to Uruguay last week, but Lionel Scaloni’s team remains the best defensively in the tournament.
The Brazilian team faces challenges with key players side-lined. Neymar underwent surgery for a left knee injury, while Vinícius Júnior is out for two months due to a hamstring issue. Rodrygo from Real Madrid, Gabriel Martinelli from Arsenal, and Joao Pedro from Brighton will share the attacking responsibilities. Keep an eye on 17-year-old Endrick from Palmeiras, who debuted off the bench in the defeat against Colombia.
With the Brazilians depleted attack, Argentina might view this as a prime opportunity finally win a qualifier in the Maracana. However, for Diniz, his side must not lose this game. The question remains: Can Brazil breach Argentina’s previously impenetrable defence? I think the draw is most likely outcome here.
Good luck!
