Ecuador enter their upcoming qualifying game against Chile sitting in sixth position on just five points in as many games, but this does not tell the whole story for this game. The Ecuadorians lost the first game of the campaign away to World Cup holders Argentina, in a narrow 1-0 defeat in quite an even game. Despite the Argentines’ having the majority of the ball, Ecuador held their own until Lionel Messi curled in a free-kick on 78 minutes.

Since then, they are yet to suffer another defeat, beating Marcelo Biesla’s Uruguay 2-1 in a shock result and claiming a 2-1 win in Bolivia. A pair of 0-0 draws have occurred next, at home to Colombia which is no disgrace, and a goal-less draw in Venezuela, which is a tough place to go.

Their opponents, Chile are in disarray, after a 0-0 home draw against Paraguay last week, head coach Eduardo Berizzo was immediately dismissed and replaced by interim boss Nicolás Córdova. Despite sitting on five points themselves, they were held to a 0-0 draw last week by Paraguay, who played the majority of the game with just ten men.

They were beaten 3-0 by Venezuela in a game where they only registered one shot on target. They did claim a win over Peru, a goal-less draw themselves at home to Colombia but were beaten 3-1 away in Uruguay on opening day.

The new coach Córdova has only had four days to work with the team and one thing that needs sorting out as soon as possible is their discipline – it’s horrendous.  Chile have saw two red cards in the last two games, and have seen at least two yellows in five of the last six internationals.

However, when they do attack, they play very wide and should win corners. They have won at least three corners in all of the last five games in the tournament.

Good luck!
