After a historic 2-1 win over Brazil last week, thanks to a Luiz Diaz double, Colombia head to Paraguay looking to collect another three points and I think they can complete this mission. Néstor Lorenzo’s side are on a 16-game unbeaten run, winning 11 of those games and currently look certain to make it to the World Cup sitting in third of the COMNEBOL qualifying league.
Their opponents Paraguay, coached by Daniel Garnero, sit in fifth with five points in as many games but currently look no match for the Los Cafeteros. Garnero, who took over in September, has managed a hard fought point last week away to Chile, where the Paraguayans played the majority of the game with ten men. Before that they secured Garnero’s first win at home to Bolivia, in an uninspiring 1-0 win, although they did dominate the game.
One thing that Paraguay can boast about is that they have kept a clean sheet at home in the last five internationals, however that is about to change tonight. On their travels Colombia have failed to score in their first two qualifying games against Chile and Ecuador, but they are in buoyant mood after the win against Brazil last week, and will look to secure another win here.
Two-goal hero against Brazil, Luiz Diaz will be a major threat here and midfielder Jhon Arias is ready for selection after missing the Brazil game due to suspension. While the Colombians are missing two defenders, left-back Deiver Machado is out with an injury and Davinson Sanchez has accumulated too many yellow cards and will sit this one out with suspension. Despite the defensive issues, the Colombians showed last week, especially in their dominant second-half performance where they outplayed and outfought the Brazilians.
Arguably Paraguay’s best player, Miguel Almiron is absent due to injury and first choice right-back Roberto Rojas received a red card against Chile so Garnero will have to throw Juan Caceres in there. Caceres who came on as a first-half substitute was making his international debut and did not look out of place. Meanwhile, he will have to contend with Diaz this time round, and Caceres is a bit of a card magnet.
The Lanus full-back was ousted out of Racing Club at the start of the Argentine season after a reckless double yellow card on opening day. Once at Lanus, he has been booked seven times and received a further two red cards. Diaz is averaging 1.8 fouls drawn over the last ten games, and 1.53 in the last ten Colombian games. His trickery could get Caceres’ in the referee Jesús Valenzuela’s book, who is notorious for dishing out cards. Valenzuela is averaging 4.56 yellows over his last 10 games, and 0.6 sending offs.
Good luck!
