Colombia and Portugal meet at the Hard Rock Stadium in the final matchday of Group K, to decide who finishes top of group. The South Americans arrive perfect on six points after beating DR Congo and Uzbekistan, while the Portuguese sit on four following a draw with DR Congo and a comfortable win over Uzbekistan. As ever, Cristiano Ronaldo dominated the headlines after that opening stalemate, with many questioning whether he should still be starting for the national team — but his brace in the 5–0 victory last time out has quietened the debate, at least for now.
Colombia, though, have been the more impressive side across the two matchdays, and full‑back Daniel Muñoz has been outstanding. The Crystal Palace defender has scored in back‑to‑back games and even had another ruled out for offside against DR Congo. Néstor Lorenzo’s team are in an excellent position: they don’t need to win here, and a draw is enough to secure top spot.
Portugal, on the other hand, may feel they do need the victory — partly for pride, but more importantly for the knockout‑stage pathway. Finishing second would send them into a last‑32 tie with Ghana before a potential meeting with the winner of Spain versus a third‑place qualifier. Topping Group K, however, offers a far more manageable route: Croatia or a third‑place team in the last 32, then Switzerland or another third‑place side in the last 16, with Argentina looming only at the quarter‑final stage.
If Portugal decide to take risks and chase the win, they could easily play themselves into trouble. Colombia are built for exactly this type of game. Luis Diaz will thrive on space opening up to run into, Daniel Muñoz will attack the flank with aggressive overlaps, James Rodriguez picks passes in transition, and Jhon Arias or Gustavo Puerta will stretch the Portuguese back four by attacking the channels. The more Portugal push forward, the more Colombia’s best weapons become amplified.
However, if Roberto Martinez decides to shift the approach and settle for Portugal’s current position, you can expect a more cautious, risk‑averse performance — dominating the ball, but not overcommitting or exposing themselves.
Luis Diaz has found at least one shot on target in all of the eight last internationals for Colombia, hopefully he doesn’t ruin the streak in this one.
