Argentina and Egypt meet in Atlanta for a Round of 16 clash where the defending champions look to push further toward another trophy, but they do so against an opponent far more solid than many expected. Argentina cruised through the group stage with a perfect record, yet their extra‑time win over Cape Verde exposed fatigue and structural issues. That 3–2 victory has prompted talk of Lionel Scaloni freshening the lineup. As always, Messi dominates the narrative with seven goals already, joint top scorer, and the heartbeat of every attack.
Egypt arrive unbeaten, drawing with Belgium and Iran, beating New Zealand, and then knocking out Australia. They’re organised, disciplined, and carry a genuine threat through Emam Ashour, who has scored twice. For Argentina, Egypt are almost an unknown quantity as their last meeting was in the 1928 Olympics.
Egypt’s unbeaten run deserves respect, but the skill gap remains significant. Argentina should control possession throughout, though Cape Verde’s success may have given Egypt ideas on how to disrupt the champions. Argentina scored three but conceded two in that match, and Egypt have scored and conceded in every game they’ve played. Both teams scoring feels plausible, but Argentina’s quality should ultimately be too much for Egypt to withstand.
Messi, already on seven goals, should have plenty of chances to strike again. Argentina funnel everything through him — he drifts, waits, and then comes alive for free‑kicks, penalties or quick lay‑offs around the box.
If Egypt enjoy any spells of pressure, their corner numbers suggest they can profit. They won seven vs Belgium, 3 vs New Zealand, 8 vs Iran and 7 vs Australia, showing they generate corners whenever they push teams back. Cape Verde managed eight against Argentina in the last round, and with Egypt’s consistency, 2/1 for Egypt to hit 4 corners looks overpriced.
Mostafa Ziko looks a strong candidate for two or more fouls here. Egypt’s lone striker has hit this line in each of his last three matches, despite not finishing any of them. He was subbed off after 67 minutes against Australia and after 76 minutes in both group games versus New Zealand and Iran. His role forces constant back‑to‑goal duels, pressing centre‑backs and disrupting build‑up play — all high‑contact actions. With Argentina dominating possession and Egypt spending long spells defending, Zaki should again rack up fouls.
Best of luck.
