The AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the same ground where Spain swept aside Austria 3–0, sets the stage for one of the most anticipated Iberian derbies in recent history. Spain arrive at the home of the Dallas Cowboys as the only team in the tournament yet to concede a goal, while Portugal come into the tie after surviving one of the most dramatic and controversial matches of the tournament, edging Croatia with a stoppage‑time header from Gonçalo Ramos.
The Portuguese win over Croatia saw a strong opening half‑hour, wastefulness in front of goal, a lapse that allowed Perišić to score early in the second half, a lifeline through Ronaldo’s penalty, and finally a dramatic rescue act from Ramos. While Croatia saw a equaliser ruled out for a dubious offside ruling involving the chip inside the ball.
Rafael Leão’s introduction was one of the few clear positives, his pace and directness making him one of the standout performers. Yet the team left Toronto with as many questions as answers. The biggest revolves around Cristiano Ronaldo, who reacted visibly when Roberto Martínez substituted him with the score level. The decision ultimately paid off, but it has created an emotional dilemma ahead of the Spain match. Martínez must decide whether to lean into sentiment and start Ronaldo or reward Ramos for his decisive impact.
Spain, by contrast, arrive in complete command of their game. The 3–0 win over Austria was dominant from start to finish, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring twice, Pedro Porro adding his first goal for La Roja, and goalkeeeper Unai Simón extending his clean‑sheet streak to 450 minutes. Even the injury to Nico Williams, one of their main left‑side threats, has not disrupted their rhythm.
Lamine Yamal, now fully recovered from his early‑tournament fitness issues, at 18 has more than fifty caps, his acceleration and dribbling present a severe test for any defender. Oyarzabal’s four goals place him among the Golden Boot contenders, and Spain’s midfield, controlled by Rodri and Pedri, dictates matches with a level of authority unmatched in the competition.
All signs point to Spain winning this match and keeping their extraordinary clean‑sheet record intact. Five matches played and not a single goal conceded. Simón has barely been troubled, protected by a back line that defends both with and without the ball. Spain’s ability to dominate possession suffocates opponents, reducing their attacking output and forcing them into long defensive phases. Portugal, who have struggled to convert chances and have conceded in every meaningful test, are unlikely to find the clarity or space required to break Spain down. The uncertainty surrounding Portugal’s attack only strengthens Spain’s position.
Spain’s attack is sharper, more varied and more consistent. Yamal’s explosiveness, Oyarzabal’s finishing, and the creativity of Dani Olmo and Alex Baena give Spain multiple routes to goal. Portugal, by contrast, rely heavily on individual inspiration, crosses and moments of transition.
To reiterate, Spain arrive with five wins, five clean sheets, and complete confidence. Portugal arrive with heart, resilience but uncertainty. In a match decided by fine margins, Spain’s structure, discipline and defensive perfection, it’s hard to see how they do not keep their clean sheet record intact.
Looking at the history of corners for these two sides makes the corner Bet Builder extremely appealing. Portugal’s numbers across the tournament have been erratic. They managed nine corners in the win over Croatia, but that stands out as an exception rather than a trend. Against Colombia they produced only two, just three against Uzbekistan, and five against DR Congo.
On the other hand, Spain have been relentless and remarkably consistent. Their 9–0 corner count against Austria underlined their dominance. Spain also won 6–1 in corners against Uruguay, repeated the same 6–1 margin against Saudi Arabia, and overwhelmed Cape Verde 11–1. They pin teams back for long stretches, and concede very few opportunities at the other end.
Best of luck.
